On November 26, 1977 Larry and his friend, journalist Steve Turner went to see the Damned and The Dead Boys at the Round House in London. It was Larry’s first (of many) punk rock shows. A few months later he talked about the experience in a magazine interview. Here’s the edited transcript that was sent to Larry for approval or corrections.
Larry had a pretty hectic schedule in the '70s, flying around the world with a full calendar. This is a ten day itinerary for a visit to New Zealand in 1977. As you can see, his wife Pam wanted some attention too, so she started her own "ministry", a Charm School For Working Girls, which sounds really creepy, and which one would assume addressed such ecclesiastical concerns as applying mascara and sewing butterfly patches on one's pants. Ahh, the '70s...
Back before computers, people had to scribble on drafting paper in order to make album covers. Here's Larry's scribbling, made while creating the Something New Under The Son album cover.
From the list of songs I'm guessing that this set list is from 1985. Here's some poor quality video of the poor quality band. Apart from Jon Linn, I mean. He's shredding. It looks like my hair was too. Sometime around 1970 Larry Norman the "Rock Festival Star" flew to Hobbs, New Mexico directly from Hollywood, for a "most thrilling experience." Also there that morning was an ex-dope addict and hoodlum who talked about himself a lot while people in the audience sat there, hoping to win a free airplane trip. What a show!
This is an invoice from Air Studios, London, for one day of many that Larry spent there recording So Long Ago The Garden. On July 21st, 1973, A state-of-the-art Neve 32/24 console was installed in Studio Two. Three days later Larry was using it. This invoice, dated July 27th, 1973, is for 6.5 hours of recording time and a reel of 2" 24 track tape, which we still have in the archives. The grand total for the day's session was £277, or $700 at the then current exchange rate. Adjusting for inflation that would be £2,932 today, or $4,563. This other invoice is for the three days prior. It adds up to £1,083 ($2,729) which is £11,458 in today's economy, or $17,831. Yikes! |
